Our newest Children’s Resource Centre in operation since January 2015, is in the village of Vinayakapuram in Thirukkovil of the Ampara District in the Eastern Province. 200 children from 4 different local schools (grade 3-9) are registered at the centre.
Apart from the 2004 tsunami, Vinayakapuram has also been significantly affected by the civil war for 3 decades. Educational standards here are very poor, with high rates of teenage pregnancy and suicide. The local economy is mainly dependent on agricultural activities and fishing, although opportunity for sustainable livelihoods is limited and roads and infrastructure are inadequate as a result of the tsunami and ethnic conflict.
The centre aims to give the disadvantaged children and youth of the area a space for personal growth,to learn English and Sinhala so as to promote ethnic harmony as well as developing their IT skills so they are better prepared for employment.
